"The Trumpet" on Depression

I was reading an article from the The Philadelphia Trumpet magazine entitled Defeat Depression-Master your Mind published in December 2011 the article written by Dennis Leap, and he works out an outline on how to operate your mind. He does so by quoting the Bible and digging into scripture.
He states that twisted and distorted thinking is the major cause of suffering for people flattened by depression. The twisted thinking is illogical, but it seems so real that you have convinced yourself that your depression will go on forever. This was shown to me in a most dramatic way.
I was suffering from allergies big time, so sensitive that even being outside a small amount of time would send me running inside to clear anything out of my lungs by breathing the filtered air from the air conditioning system. I would do slow breathing through a cloth and in about twenty minutes I would calm down. I would have an air purifier in my bedroom and a dehumidifier in there as well. I could not sleep because of the noise. The air, being drier, stopped the dust mites but being drier gave me trouble as well. These things played on my mind. Did life have to be this way? I was already on a restricted diet because of allergies, now even my work outside in the pollen and dust filled air and house full of dust mites were against me. I had been involved in a car accident in May of 2011, and so the body was in shock as well. I had, in essence, a nervous breakdown and ended up in a mental hospital, twice in a six week period for depression and anxiety.
Now I want to illustrate how this mind of mine works and relate that back to the Trumpet article. My allergy symptoms were greatly exaggerated  and multiplied and when the time came to get an allergy shot I let them know about how the allergies were affecting me. The doctor came in and told me that he could handle the allergies, what ever else I had was something else (ie in my mind). I came home and the room that I was in was not as clean as I wanted it to be, and for me a source of some of the allergies. But as my mind grasped what the doctor had told me, the allergies symptoms abated immediately. My mind had made the hell that I was experiencing. I began to relate this experience to the depression and my brain began to unlock, to wake up from the depression. I began to trace my thoughts just as I have been tracing food, and environmental and chemical allergic problems.
The article in the Trumpet quotes David Burns, author of Feeling Good: "Every bad feeling you have is the result of your distorted negative thinking. Illogical, pessimistic attitudes play the central role in the development and continuation of all your symptoms."Dennis Leap in his article states "To recover from depression, people must learn that every depressed feeling has its corresponding distorted or illogical thought. That negative thought came before and created the depressed feeling. If you are depressed, you must isolate, examine and replace all your illogical thinking with thought that is based on true facts.
This stunned me each time I thought about it. I had been told of this time and again, but until I suffered it blatantly in my experience with the allergies, I did not believe it. Preferring to blame it on outside sources I have wallowed in depression for most of my life. Perhaps I am working toward a real release here.

Allergies, Drug Interactions, rTMS

In an email from Herb (in black, my response in red):

In my wife's case we were treating coughing, congestion and a prolific amount of phlegm for sometime thinking it was a cold or flu like symptoms.  After numerous testing and chest x-ray my wife was finally diagnosed with what turned out to be Asthma. For me, it was dust, dust mites, grass, pollen, ragweed. For the Asthma she utilizes a nebulizer twice a day containing two drugs; Brovana and Budesonide.  While most drugs list potential side-effects from soup to nuts, I carefully monitor, observe and maintain empirical records on her reactions to all her medications and treatments.  My wife also uses Benedryl for two purposes at bedtime.   One it helps with the congestion and it aids with sleep.I use it to help with sleep as well  So far, no problems with these meds.
I'm not a doctor but through my training as a former Board Member, President and facilitator of a local chapter of DBSA (Herb, I don't(know what DBSA is) I don't give anyone advice but rather share our experiences, my research, knowledge and collaboration with mental health professionals around the world.  I advocate for patient and support person education while encouraging hope and persistence. That is why I  blog.
With that said I really wouldn't have anything to suggest for allergies other than to carefully read all drug literature and while some drugs list the potential for depression and/or other serious side-effects one has to also address the immediate medical problem first. I have a tendency to ruminate on what the negative aspects of  what the drug could do to me, and thus increase the fear factor in the issue. I monitor my body and the reactions it may have, then look the drug up to see if it matches what is going on with me. I would then suggest careful record keeping to see if in fact a particular med negatively effects one's mood state.  As many of us already know each individual is unique and so too one's responses to all treatment options.  Therefore you might utilize a med effectively while the same drug may negatively impact my wife.  I coined a phrase some 5 decades ago as it relates to her therapies, "The Trail and Error Approach to Wellness" as it applies to her mental well being. Bingo!!
From our experiences I would avoid adding or combining too many drugs at once as one can't determine what drug is doing what or negatively impacting the individual.  One treatment option people often over look is slowly withdrawing from all medications and then starting from square one. This I have done as well, and am in the process of going the way of drugs again, in an attempt to stabilize myself in order to return to work.  Too often treating physicians tend to have tunnel vision and only look at their specialty while the patient ends up heavily medicated and the situation worsens.
I also read that you were talking about rTMS.  I can share with you from my discussions with Dr. John O'Reardon of University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Mark George of the Medical School of South Carolina that rTMS can be performed safely on VNS patients by knowledgeable physicians.  One individual with whom I collaborate was not achieving significant benefit from VNS.  So he went on to try rTMS which did the trick for him.  The problem is no one can guarantee what will or will not work for any given patient.  We simply have to keep trying until we find a treatment or combination of treatments that produce some efficacy.

Brother John

I have suffered from my brother not caring to admit that I exist. It is his attitude. I believe he is stressed out and suffers allergies and things as I do, but he keeps it inside and becomes cold towards all people, especially family. To those who could help him. So I have to survive and I turn away from the relationship and move on. I can not get emotional support from him, nor financial either, so it will remain a purely surface relationship for now. I admired him growing up. Admired his degrees, learning, ability to make money, security and self-confidence. But not coldness, lack of emotion, empathy, and soul. I care for him deeply. but in this latest bout with the disease of depression, I have learned that a disease that is not seen, is not understood by the unempathic and logical people of this family. But to survive, one must not hold on to the things of childhood, but cast them aside if they are in the way of moving on,

Vindicated!!!!!!!

If you want a great  psychiatrist in the Orlando area, Dr. Lillian Saavedra is the one to go to. She said that allergies are the cause of depression! That when one is undergoing a bad about of allergies to use the anti depressants, then get off of them! That one does not have to be a slave to the drugs! She will be where I will stay in this current about of allergy flare up. Why go anywhere else? She said that the current administration of allergy shots and the VNS should be fine for me. She switched up the medications and the timing of them. We will try this new way of doing things.

Singular in the morning, Xyzal in the noon time, no more antihistamines after about 2pm. She took me off the Abilify and Lexapro, and put me on Cymbalta. Gave me a schedule of how to get off Abilify. We mentioned me going to Steven Spieser for treatment, however Lillian is about only two miles away from me. I had Spieser twenty years ago. He may have changed in all that time, but I like her more than him because she the drugs are not to make you a slave to them, he was different on that tack. But more information has come out in twenty years.

Investigating SSI

Social Security income. Well, I am investigating. Andrea Sheldon thinks that I might have a neurological condition that has gone undiagnosed and could be getting worse. If this is so than that with 20 years under
psychiatric care and not being able to be outside in the weather for the allergies that I suffer to do the work that I have been able to do in the past may be enough to start the ball rolling. So I will be getting the insurance and doctor's records together to get the process started.

Steriods: The answer for now?

Dear Edna,
They gave me a shot of a steroid and I began to feel better. I dreamed last night, for the first time in many weeks. This only occurs when the allergies are at bay. This means that I slept deeply despite the VNS implant. I am going to make it I feel. I don't really want more medications, but I need sleep and  symptom removal so the anxiety and depression, itchiness, imbalance go away. I am still on the path to find a better way than drugs to solve the problems. Will always be.
Then to the blog:
I started doing enemas with coffee about Oct 7. It stimulates the bile production in the liver and the detox of the liver and the bodily systems. Organic coffee and distilled water. Could no longer afford the seventy dollar supplement to support glutathione production that the enemas produce. I am reading "The Gerson Therapy". Big read, I do it while I do the enema (lol) for 12 minutes.

Ann Frahm's Battle

I am battling other issues besides depression as well. Life is not a one issue affair. I have a thickening in the left breast. I am studying the Gerson Therapy (in hopes of finding relief from my constant allergies) and also have run across the story below. It was in an email sent to me by a friend.
I heard Ann Frahm speak years ago. She had a book out on how to rid of cancer and
had followed with a book how not to get cancer. She had chemo and 5 weeks to live.
She was cancer free at the end of those 5 weeks!
You have to read her story! http://curezone.com/diseases/cancer/cancer_anne_frahm.asp
She and her husband have a clinic in CO. Please refer this to anyone who has cancer and its
affects on the body!  She was leaching the chemo and had fungus from head to toe from all
the antibiotics.  Perhaps something from it will help you.
I have her books but its been years since I skimmed thru them. She has or had products to
sell too.

Butterbur: European Herb

I am investigating the herb butterbur because it is suggested that the allergies that I currently have may be helped. Mold is one such allergy.
Here, from Web MD are my notes:
Other names of herb:
Blatterdock, Bog Rhubarb, Bogshorns, Butter Bur, Butterburr, Butter-Dock, Butterfly Dock, Capdockin, Exwort, Flapperdock, Japanese Butterbur, Japonica Petasites, Langwort, Pestwurz, Petasites, Petasites flower, Petasites hybridus, Petasites officinalis Petasites leaf, Petasites rhizome, Petasites root, Petasitidis Folium, Petasitidis Rhizoma, Petasitidis Hybridus, Petasites Japonicus, Petasites Vulgaris, Plague Root, Purple Butterbur, Tussilago hybrida, Umbrella Leaves.
It can cause liver damage and should be labeled PA-free to be safe in taking the product. PA's are chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Take these nasties out and the product is good to go. The herb is good for the following
Butterbur is used for pain, upset stomach, stomach ulcers, migraine and other headaches, ongoing cough, chills, anxiety, plague, fever, trouble sleeping (insomnia), whooping cough, asthma, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), and for irritable bladder and urinary tract spasms. Butterbur is also used to stimulate the appetite. So watch out to not gain weight on this one.

Allergies and Chiropractic

The chiropractor is adjusting my neck differently now that I told him about my allergies. After new X-ray, he put a new treatment protcol into effect. It seems to be helping a great deal. There is a bone in the neck that controls many functions dealing with what is directly affecting me, allergies and depression. That bone is the atlas. It is completely off center almost one eight of an inch. This is quite a bit and causes severe allergies to flair up. It is helping me in the mold, pollen and dust fight. Apparently the tendons in that area are either non existent in me, or very weak. We are addressing that in my neck.

Pest Control the Natural Way

I am extremely allergic to pesticides. Living in Florida causes me no headache in the house with roaches and fleas.  Mostly roaches for the pet products that keep the cat free of fleas don't seem to harm me if I don't touch them. There is no smell to those products. But if I try to "bomb" the house with Raid, or another rather cheap brand, well even wrapped up in plastic clothing and wearing goggles and a hat and mask I get sick. Just about a half hour worth of breathing through a mask and I am sick for three days. Intense depression and anxiety. So I have not sprayed for about 6 to 8 months. I can't take it anymore. In the rainy season it is simply horrible in the amount of roaches that are in and around the kitchen and bath. I am not a dirty person, it is just an old house and Florida conditions. So I am trying something else.
Something called  eco-friendlypestcontrol (link below)
Here is the email from them:

Thank you for your enquiry. Our products are naturally based just for sensitive accounts like yours. The roaches themselves are very bad for allergies and other respatory problems. They have a dandure that stays in the air. Like I said our products are natural so they have a slight smell. It smells a bit like rosemary and thyme. The product line we use is "ECO Smart" @prentiss .com and Mother Earth @BASF.com. you could contact them and do a little more research. You do need to know that being natural it will take a while to kill the roaches.Even the strong stuff doesn't kill them right away.
    Thanks Eco-Friendly Pest Control.

I have severe allergies, and am very sensitive to many smells and chemicals. Is there a way that I could check out how your product would affect me before I have you treat my house? It is now over run with roaches and I have had it, but am afraid that if you treat it and I am unable to live in it for any length of time, well, I would have done myself a disservice. Please help me.

Thought Bubbles: One Year after

When dealing with the ongoing struggles and uphill battles that life brings us one has to remember that those of us that have gone on before are all ready there with Jesus. The coming month is the anniversary of my niece's death. She suffered depression and we still don't know what she died from, but not from suicide.
That we live now in the present with God, the Great I AM. It is a present designation, here and now. In depression this is what matters. To concentrate on here and now. Not yesterday in the horror of the anxiety and depression attack that happened, or tomorrow in what the weather may bring ( for I suffer many allergies, some weather induced-mold allergies), but the now. It is now that God IS. So take heart, I will fight for the now, for that is all that I have strength for, and all that I was made for.

Allergic Reactions are Decreasing

With the introduction of DMSA to draw out the heavy metals from my system and my gaining the knowledge that of the foods and chemicals that are affecting me, I am feeling less and less depression.
On the days that I have my chiropractic adjustments I need less sleep. I believe this is because more healing is being done just after the adjustment throughout the day, and I need less sleep for the body to recover for the next day. The VNS device is doing its job as well. Until I need less and less sleep each night, which I believe will happen as the body heals from the allergies,  I will keep it as it is. When I feel that I can safely turn it down I will. I do want to eventually turn it down for it hurts greatly as it goes off every two hours.

Aging out of Allergies

Julie Deardorff writes another article on allergies: and I think that a spin off would be to check if there is a homepathic way to fight allergies. I mean in one part of the article Immunotherapy is given as pills or drops under the tongue abchomeopathy could help.

Allergies:Possible cause to everything

In the quest to find relief from the everyday suffering, I use this blog as a bucket to through information into. The latest is this I received from a friend:http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2011/03/01/now-available-the-everything-beans-book/
It seems to have a great deal of information. It links to many more sites that have more information.

Intense Allergic Reactions

Last monday when I got up I could not stand very well, my balance being affected by the allergies. My brain was crashing into depression. I prayed for inspiration. Take more probiotics, and pump them into the system. Break open the capsule and put into the water that I am drinking throughout the day. I started to feel better.
As I was doing taxes I noted that I had been sick in the spring in 09, 10, and ended up in the hospital both times. Different problems both times. Both times very weak. Could allergies have something to do with this? I believe so.
Also I know the allergies cause the depression. With out a doubt, when I take the probiotic the allergies go away and the depression disappears.
I am taking Sun Flora @ 200 Billion in the morning before breakfast and 15  Billion caps through out the day.
Also homeopathic sulfur 30C. Do not know if the sulfur is working.

(The probiotics boost immunity of the entire system , Where as sulfur helps make glutathione, which builds immunity-editor)

Thought Bubbles: This New Life

This booklet, published by Daugherty Ministries out of Tulsa, Oklahoma is amazing. It gives me strength in ways that I never knew before. It makes plain how Jesus is proved to be God. It states how much He loves us. Really. Then the Bible. Each time I read it something new comes to me. I have had it read to me, I have read it many times, but each time now that I read it something new comes from it. It says that the Holy Spirit is working on me as this happens.
Let me tell you that I had run, legs pumping as hard as they could to escape  the tyranny of God, the Holy Spirit. And yet He worked on me for years to pull me back.
As I would lie in bed, tears in my eyes from the unknown source of the depression, He was there giving me the will to survive. To find happiness. As I walked the service areas of work,  art projects and my husband's face pulled me through. Suicide was ever present,  ever behind the art projects and faces of my family. God gave me the art projects, the family to hold on to. If not, I would not be here today to share  this with anyone who reads this blog.
Now when I feel I need the strength to go on, well, He is there in Person. Inside me, as I have now asked Him to be. It has, and continues to be an up hill battle to maintain what I call sanity.
This health problem, sanity from depression, has run in my family for possibly about 100 years. I don't know the length, but my relative in some ancient photos (1880's) is know to have been in and out of mental hospitals. She may have been the same person that wanted to die after a horse kicked her in the chest, stomach area. I have another aunt (M) that suffers from the disease, and she is in her mid eighties. My niece that died in Oct 2010 at thirty had at one time been on medications for it. Most of her family suffers from allergies, or has had cancer.
But the fight goes on, and we will survive to tell others, to love them in the best way we can.

First Real Down Turn

I have been living from day to day, ever increasing the amount of activity and of course stress. And I have to say that I have been doing quite well. Instead of crashing after an early shift, I can do things, which is way cool. Until the past three days. Now on the forth day I am much better. Heat, dress codes at work, despising people's actions at work, higher gas price, medical bills, yadah yadah, yadah. One gets the picture.
I have found that my creativity level is up.Way up, migraine, much lower. Still see floaters. That maybe just a part of my vision anyway. I am still on the first level of drug reduction. So I think the whole process will take two or three years. We will be patient. (It is now 3 years later, and I am continuing to find the roots of the depression and the VNS keeps plugging along, the depression is linked to allergies, hormones, spinal maladjustment, digestive problems, immunity, toxicity as well-editor)
