Dextrose is Maltodextrin?!

Dextrose in anything could be causing problem after about 3 days.
I have been using a product called Stevia in the Raw for about a year. It was the cheapest Stevia product that I could afford. I thought Maltodextrin was an additive and in that it was bad for me, but it tasted soooo good. But then the other day it happened. I was not eating anything else that would cause a problem and then in my brain a switch went on. Malto"dex"trin  is from "dex"trose. Duh. Well. I stopped taking it, because I was drinking it constantly in the water I was drinking all day long. Duh.
Now I am changed to another product that has more sodium that I want to deal with. But one thing at a time.

  1. You are close but not quite correct. Maltodextrin is a modified form of dextrose. Dextrose is a pure form of sugar. Maltodextrin is chemically modified sweetness drawn out of corn and a few other things. The process used to create it includes some wierd sounding things like formaldehyde and bleach (remember that white flour and sugar are whitened with bleach, and that coffee is dehydrated with bleach). If the label reads "dextrose," it will probably be real sugar. If the word is modified - like DEXTRIN, MALTODEXTRIN, etc., it's chemically treated and modified.

    I'm a lay person with multiple chemical intolerances. My journey began decades ago, most likely as an undiagnosed ADHD - both my kids are ADHD - with severe depression, treated with medicines that didn't worse and made me increasingly worse until I was full blown and on the heaviest psychotropics possible. Then some doctor(s) said "We won't give you any more medicines," and I wigged out. I got used to it and as I got older, with health, dietary, and lifestyle changes you won't know I'm the same person (though I worked medically and ppl who knew me then don't WANT to admit that I might possibly have changed!! Jerks).

    Now post-menopausal, I have a whole host of food allergies and intolerances, which are self-recognized and diagnosed since I'm told "The closest Allergist who deals with food allergies in Upstate NY is 200 miles away." Yuh. Ok. We've got one of the top medical schools in this part of the country here.

    Stevia - *I* personally do not react to Nutrasweet or Stevia. Stevia is a different product altogether. BUT some Stevia MIGHT be made or cut with maltodextrin. I took a chance and bought some and I use it sparingly.

    However - The best bet you have, and especially with any chronic condition - is to eat as NATURALLY as you can and eliminate all the chemicals you possibly can - safely - and with doctors' blessings. I can't touch caffeine. Chocolate is a huge no-no, not because of the caffeine but I am hypersensitive to the theobromine. Alcohol isn't going to help anything, though I'll bet the doctors say it won't hurt anything in moderation. I disagree. And water, pure and simple, is the best thing you can drink - nothing added. If you need to add something for flavor, make it a few squeezes from a piece of fresh fruit. And speaking of fruit - fresh fruit for dessert at lunch and dinner will help eliminate sweet cravings. When I don't get my fruit, I crave sweets.

    See my Facebook page called Maltodextrin Intolerance Awareness. I pull articles off the internet and post them there. My reaction is GI- severe diarrhea & flatulence - but there are quite a few others who are stating that they have severe panic attacks from what appears to be maltodextrin.

  2. Thank you Susan for posting. I am going to research a test that will test for food allergies and will list what you can eat frequently, moderately, and not at all. ALCAT by Cell Science Systems, Lts.corp. I have, like you, done hosts of self tests, but would like to have a test result in my hand to prove to others I am not crazy.(LOL)( I know I am not) And to know if I can have other foods that i can very my diet with.
